A Strange Animal: The U.S. troops are leaving, but the journalists are staying in Iraq, working under deadlines and death threats. In a short documentary special for Newsweek & The Daily Beast, filmmaker Richard Pendry reveals the new techniques — more John LeCarre than J-school — reporters have devised to get the story in Iraq. Fascinating viewing for anyone interested in the intersection of war, conflict, and journalism.
Anyone notice something special about today’s Des Moines Register online front page? Possibly some pressing … ethical issues? Oh yeah … the “Paid for by Obama for America” notes only came AFTER the ads went online.
Wowza. I get annoyed when things like the touring musical production of “Mary Poppins” take over our website like this. This is a much stickier situation.

Pool and his partner Henry Ferry are doing more with $500 Samsung Galaxy S II phones on Sprint’s 4G Network than TV networks can muster with thousands of dollars of gear, satellite trucks, pretty anchors, and helicopters. CBS News’s UStream, for example, offers an unfiltered feed from its eye in the sky. But the CBS feed has often felt like a mere complement to Pool’s on-the-ground coverage. (Plus, Pool and Ferry hope to get flying video drones that would augment their coverage—read on). On Nov. 17th, for example, when Pool was among thousands who first gathered at Foley Square in Manhattan then walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, the helicopter pilot on the CBS Ustream searched for the right shot, panned around the city randomly, and talked to a person presumably back in some studio about his wife’s prowess for holiday tree decorating.

<- I’ve tuned into this quite a bit. They do an amazing job. The sheer stamina is impressive, as is their ability to narrate the visuals on the fly.
No tool will save journalism. You will.
Some Beatles in my living room with @DarrenCriss & @SashaSloan. Amazing!
